July 2, 2009 - 11:25 AM Marylanders Grow Oysters program Hello MCCA Residents,
The Coastal Conservation Association has a large oyster restoration project, and we are looking for participants to care for 4 cages of oysters for 1 year. Each year the oysters will be collected and placed on permanent sanctuary, if participants wish to continue growing oysters their cages will be refilled with oyster seed. This program is identical to the CBF program - as a partner with the Marylanders Grow Oysters program. (http://www.oysters.maryland.gov/) This year we have 1500 cages to distribute in the Patuxent River, and so far we're planning to distribute 240 cages to Mill Creek.
The only requirement to participate in this project is to join the Coastal Conservation Association ($25). Please see www.ccamd.org for information, and click "JOIN" to join CCA on line. CCA is a national recreational fishing organization that takes a "resource first" approach to policy decisions. Nationally there are about 100,000 members, and in MD there are about 2000.
We are scheduled to deploy cages to Mill creek on July 11th - if you'd like to participate, please contact me with your Name, Address, Telephone, Email Address, and pier location - once you have Joined CCA. You do not have to be present to receive your cages, if you provide enough information we can deliver them to your dock. There will also be a pick up location for those that wish to come pick up their cages. Also - I would be happy to come to the Town Homes to give a presentation on the project anytime. I realize the content of these emails are barely do the project justice.
Thanks,
Scott McGuire
President, CCA MD Patuxent River Chapter
