Garden in Progress

In order to address some of the concerns mentioned in Donna Miller’s email, we thought it would be good to share information about the new garden that is “under construction” near the entrance to our community.  The grasses were removed because they were dead in the center.  Kip and I volunteered to replant that area to make it more colorful and appealing.

The new flowers near the inside of the fence are perennials, so they should bloom throughout the summer every year.  We stared with two butterfly bushes and three Lord Baltimore hibiscus plants. The plants are small now, but they should grow to a height of 5 or 6 feet.  They also will spread and provide more cover along the fence.  Because they were not planted until early summer, the plants will not be as big as we want this year, but they should fill in the back part of the garden nicely next year.

The other perennials that are coming up are gladiolas.  They should bloom later this summer.  Once these flowers really get going, we plan to share the blooms with anyone who would like to enjoy them in their homes.  There are a few annuals planted along the front edge of the garden for some extra color while we wait for the gladiolas.

We are certainly open to your suggestions about additional flowers you would like to see.  Of course anyone is welcome to join us in the digging and weeding as we progress.  Some of us already have perennial gardens growing in other areas of the community. Plants in those gardens often need to be divided, so that will provide opportunities to add new varieties to the newest garden at no additional expense.

Please feel free to provide your thoughts and suggestions when you see us in the community or in an email.  It is a community garden, so we look forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely,

Peggy Wilson
